New York City’s Community Education Councils (CECs) are at the heart of shaping local education policies. Unfortunately, only a handful of people have been participating in these roles, and the city needs a much more diverse set of parents representing our schools. There are 430 open seats among the city’s 32 school districts, which will give parents the opportunity to influence decisions that affect thousands of students citywide. If you’re a parent or guardian of a public school student, your voice can truly make a difference.

What Are CECs and Why Do They Matter?

CECs are advisory bodies that weigh in on key issues like school budgets, curriculum, and even zoning changes. While they don’t have decision-making power, their recommendations can still influence policies that directly impact your child’s education. That is why it’s so important to have a diverse set of parent voices.

The need for committed members is more crucial than ever. Recent controversies—like disputes over political issues that led to the removal of some members—have highlighted the importance of representation.

Why you should consider getting involved:

  1. Advocate for your child and your community: Joining a CEC gives you a platform to advocate for the needs of your child and their peers. Whether it’s fighting for better resources, funding, or having input on district-wide initiatives, your participation can create lasting change.
  2. Direct access: CEC members have the opportunity to speak directly with school leaders, elected officials, and other stakeholders. This access allows parents to address concerns with those who shape the policies affecting their children’s education.
  3. Get to know fellow parents: Serving on a CEC connects you with other parents, educators, and community leaders. It gives parents a chance to collaborate, share experiences, and build networks that strengthen your school district.
  4. Ensure accountability: By participating in the decision-making process, parents can hold schools and policymakers accountable.

How to get involved

Applications are currently open. Parents or legal guardians of public school students can apply by February 16 via email at CCECinfo@schools.nyc.gov. For more details, visit the Department of Education’s website or call 212-374-1936.

Be sure to vote

If you aren’t able to commit to serving, all parents are encouraged to participate in the upcoming election, which will take place from late April through May. Only 2% of parents voted in the last election, which led to 40% of the elected candidates being parents endorsed by groups with similar stances on various issues, according to Chalkbeat.

We all know how challenging parenting can be, and raising a child in New York City is no small feat, especially when it comes to navigating the public school system. Joining a CEC is your chance to shape the future of education—not just for your child, but for the whole community. This is your moment to step up, speak out, and make a difference. Learn more.
