For many New Yorkers, the high cost of medical supplies can force some people to go without lifesaving or necessary equipment. For example, wheelchairs start at a few hundred dollars but can go into the thousands.
This week, NYC Health + Hospitals announced a cost-saving benefit for New Yorkers. Through its NYC Care healthcare access program, community members can get medical equipment such as wheelchairs, rolling walkers, CPAP machines and diabetes supplies at little to no cost.
Prior to this, NYC Care provided access to low- and no-cost healthcare, regardless of immigration status or ability to pay. That included doctor appointments and ER visits, but NYC Care will now include medical supplies known as “durable medical equipment,” or DME.
Research shows that these items are often out of reach of many households, especially those who are uninsured or underinsured. However, the hospital says this will help just under 24,000 New Yorkers.
The distribution of DME started as a pilot program and is being expanded to all facilities. The hospital says diabetes-related supplies, CPAP machines, and mobility devices are the most commonly ordered DMEs.
