You often hear New Yorkers say they want to work for the MTA so they can have job security, a pension and reliable health insurance. If you are one of those people, here is your chance to work for the transit agency.
The MTA is currently hiring for transit cleaners. Prior experience and a college degree are not required. In addition to cleaning, those hired will perform light maintenance on the equipment they use (such as pressure washers) and shovel snow.
The pay starts at $20.19 an hour, but the job listing says it can increase to $33.65 an hour after six years. While this starting salary is below what’s considered a living wage, it is higher than the average for those with only a high school degree.
The benefits package includes:
- Paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave
- Night and weekend pay differentials
- Medical, dental and vision insurance plans
- A pension plan
- A transportation pass
The MTA is accepting applications until Feb. 28. You can apply online here. The MTA says it will begin scheduling interviews in April.
