Applications to serve on community boards in 2025 have started to reopen. Community boards play an important role in our neighborhoods. They work with elected officials and city agencies to ensure the community’s needs are incorporated into decisions, including everything from public transit to housing development.

To qualify for a board, you must live or work within the board’s district and be 16 years of age or older. You don’t need prior political experience to join a board. What matters most is that you care about your neighborhood.

Borough presidents appoint board members and a portion of those appointments come recommended by City Council members.

The 2025 application to join one of Brooklyn’s 18 community boards just reopened. Applications are also open for Staten Island Community Boards. The applications for the other boroughs’ community boards usually open at the beginning of the year.
