This week we welcome Amy Bassin, a multidisciplinary visual artist who seeks to express the fraught relationship between outward appearance and inner life through unconventional photography, video, artist books, and works on paper. Informed by a background in abstract drawing and painting, Bassin strives to find fresh introspection beyond the representation of any captured reality.
“With a collagist mentality my appropriated personal and media images create nuanced and layered meanings, which fluctuate between social-political issues and personal narratives I feel are currently threatening my survival.”
“Curtains of War” is a series of mixed media photo-based prints on fabric created from appropriated and altered photojournalistic images of past and present wars. These “curtains” chronicle a backdrop of military destruction affecting cities and displaced people, alongside other ravishes of war, providing a window into the urgent need for peace.”
Amy Bassin’s solo exhibitions include Governors Island, NYC; Tussle Projects, NYC; Equity Gallery Online, NYC; and group exhibitions include Spring/Break NY 2022; Lenscratch; Strange Fire Collective; F-Stop; Jason McCoy Gallery Online, NYC; and the National Museum of Fine Arts, Kyrgyzstan. Her text-based art collaboration with writer Mark Blickley, “Dream Streams” was published by Claire Songbirds Publishing House.
