Teachers have always gone above and beyond — and in the past few years we’ve seen just how vital and resilient they truly are. Teacher Appreciation Week runs through May 10 and is the perfect time to show gratitude for the people who nurture, inspire, and support our kids day in and day out. So if you’re looking for ways to show gratitude to your child’s teacher this week, no matter the budget, here are a few thoughtful and NYC-friendly ideas.

A heartfelt note from you and your child

They say it’s the thought that counts- and most teachers will tell you that even a handwritten note from you and your child — sharing specific moments or ways their teacher has made a difference — can be something they’ll keep forever.

Gift cards that go a long way

A gift card is always appreciated, especially in today’s economy. Some ideas are:

  • Local coffee shops near the school
  • A local bookstore
  • Target, Amazon, or Teachers Pay Teachers (for classroom supplies)

Note: Official guidelines say that gifts to teachers should be sentimental in nature and of small financial value.

Group gifts from the class

If you’re part of a class WhatsApp or PTA chat, consider chipping in on a gift that is still within the gift guidelines.

Note: According to the Chancellor’s regulation, teachers may accept gifts from the whole class as long as, “each student, parent or guardian in the class has the opportunity to sign the card or note that comes with the gift, whether or not the student, parent or guardian contributed to the cost of the gift.”

Classroom supplies

Many NYC teachers spend their own money on supplies. Try finding out what they are in need of, or gifting staples like dry-erase markers, colorful pens, or a nice set of Post-its and notepads. Wrap it up with a thank-you tag from your child for a personal touch. There are also plenty of silly pun ideas on Pinterest to make the presentation fun.

Local treats or plants

NYC has no shortage of local mom-and-pop businesses. Shop local and you’re not only showing gratitude to a teacher but supporting a local business:

  • A pastry or coffee from a local bakery
  • A small potted plant or succulent
  • A candle from a local shop (like Brooklyn Candle Studio or Harlem Heirloom)
