This week we are highlighting Street Works Earth, a climate action and public art festival organized by Make Justice Normal, taking place Sept. 22 on the 34th Avenue Open Street next to Travers Park in Jackson Heights, Queens, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Coinciding with the first day of New York Climate Week, the festival combines co-creative art, concrete climate actions and interactive workshops by a cohort of invited artists who consistently engage in local, community-facing projects.

“Street Works are public-space galleries for participatory art, by and for artists dedicated to making justice normal. In a time in which democracy is at risk and collective civic participation is needed more than ever, we hope to support one home by and for these artists who go beyond interactive art to sharing power with audiences in 2-way to 20-way conversations that enable the brilliance of passersby to collectively emerge. Over time and scale, we hope this is one way for democracy to become a personal and joyful experience,” said Anjali Deshmukh, organizer for Make Justice Normal.

In addition, the festival will be an opportunity to meet climate experts who are shaping the Street Works Earth vision. Join them in building bridges between art, environmental justice and practical climate action at the inaugural Street Works Earth debut.

The festival is free to the public, and attendees are encouraged to rsvp here.
