This week we welcome Sonam Desai, a Queens-based artist and designer.  Desai, who was born and raised in Pennsylvania, says she has been an artist for as long as she can remember. Yet within Desai’s community, she was told not to pursue art as there was no money in it and wouldn’t provide a fulfilled life. She went on to study business and to work in finance but always just felt a void. So in 2013, she founded Snows Design, a jewelry line inspired by South Asian food.  It started out as a “side hustle,” a way to make extra cash and splurge on fancy dinners.

“Snows Design is a reflection of my passion for creativity and cultural heritage. Inspired by my mother’s culinary artistry, I embarked on a journey to translate the flavors and textures of South Asian cuisine into wearable works of art. Through my jewelry designs, I aim to celebrate the vibrant and diverse tapestry of South Asian culture,.” she writes. “Each piece is a testament to the rich traditions, flavors, and textures that have shaped my identity. By incorporating elements from traditional confections such as the sweet swirls from Jalebis, the colorful layers of Barfi pastry and the iconic nostalgic crunch of Parle-G biscuits, I strive to create pieces that are both visually stunning and meaningful to both myself and my community.”

Over the past three years, Desai has become more focused on her creative career, and collaborated with various brands including the Taco Bell fast-food chain. These partnerships have allowed her to share her art with a wider audience and explore new creative avenues.
