This week we welcome Shin Ono, a Japanese-born photographer living in New York. Ono studied plastic and mixed media arts at the University of Tsukuba in Japan.
His process is a combination of old and new. He shoots his subjects using a vintage 4×5 wooden camera and film that he develops himself. He scans these into a digital format and laser prints the images. This reflects his many years of experience with film cameras and his work as a professional photo retoucher.
“I love photographing people. The only thing my subjects have in common is that our paths have crossed by coincidence. Smiling or not, the person’s warmth and personality come through in the final prints. This makes them and the viewer a little bit happier and that makes me really happy. I’m also drawn to objects and scenery that fill me with a sense of wonder for the world we live in,” he writes.
He has shown his work at Milk Gallery in NYC and numerous venues throughout Japan.
