Thanks to platforms like TikTok, you might have noticed your preteen’s Santa list has skincare products that cost more than what you spend on your own face. In recent years, there has been a noticeable shift in the world of skincare, with younger audiences becoming increasingly interested in products designed to improve their skin health and appearance.

Is it a bad thing?

Is there really cause for concern? Well, earlier this year, a study found a link between the recent use of products like lotions, ointments and hair conditioners and “higher levels of endocrine-disrupting chemicals called phthalates in young children.” Phthalates are a group of man-made chemicals that make plastics more flexible and durable, but are known as endocrine disruptors – which means they can “mimic, block or interfere with the body’s own hormones.” So this can cause disruptions in certain developmental moments. It has also been found that children of different racial and ethnic groups are affected differently.

So which products are safe?

Parents Magazine has a great list of eight dermatologist-approved skincare products that are not only safe for tweens, but most won’t break the bank.

Drunk Elephant: If this popular brand is on their wish list, experts say to stick to their SPF 30 sunscreen. They also say to avoid, “exfoliating, brightening, or anti-aging products” since they have the potential to cause irritation.

CeraVe: When it comes to moisturizers, CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion is a good option. It also won’t worsen any issues with acne.

Bubble: The Bubble Slam Dunk Moisturizer is plant-based and hydrates and restores nutrients. It also won’t clog pores.

Five tips for choosing safer cosmetics for kids

Regardless of sudden trends, knowing how to choose safe products for your family is important. The nonprofit Environmental Working Group (EWG) has a list of five tips for choosing safer cosmetics for kids.

  1. Know what you’re buying. The EWG has a cosmetic database of more than 70,000 products where you can see what ingredients they contain.
  2. Ingredients to look out for in kids’ products are parabens, isothiazolinones, fragrance, retinyl palmitate and other topical retinoids, talc, and formaldehyde releasers.
