The 2023-24 school year has plenty of changes in store. A new curriculum, updated safety protocols, and even breathing exercises. Starting in the fall, all New York City public schools have to offer two to five minutes of mindful breathing each day. Mayor Eric Adams has been focused on healthy eating and mental health, and he says that this new approach is ‘just one common-sense, low-cost way to improve student well-being.” While most folks are supportive of this, and any effort that focuses on students’ mental health, many are more concerned with a proposed $5 million in cuts from a mental health initiative at 50 city schools.
