“Childhood Cornucopia" (2021). Watercolor. 13” x 21.5"

This week we welcome Hema Bharadwaj, a visual artist working primarily with watercolor. For the better part of the past decade, Hema has balanced her practice with motherhood.

“Hiranyagarbha” (2024). Watercolor on Handmade paper. 34” x 25″

Hema is a teaching artist with the Arts Council of Princeton and also teaches privately from her home studio.

“Thresholds” (2024). Watercolor on Handmade paper. 34” x 25″

Her work depicts an inner world that hovers between real spaces and jubilant and explosive passages of line and color that verge on the cosmic.

“Yuj” (2021). Watercolor on paper mounted on wooden panel. 14” x 20.5″

She harnesses domesticity as a taking-off point for a series of works that can be seen as abstract, yet she also directly references Indian saris,  urban landscapes, the natural world, and bodily functions.

“When the Violin Spoke” (2023). 12” x 17″

See more of Hema’s work on her website and Instagram.
