Catalyzing change through movement, gathering and dialogue
This week we welcome Hsiao-Chu Hsia, a multidisciplinary artist from Taiwan now based in New York. Hsia’s work employs a mix of performance art and installation art.
Interactive elements invite people to not only observe as spectators but to become participants, creating opportunities to approach the matter from more than one perspective. Hsia aims to bring people into shared spaces to rethink social issues collectively, motivating each other to not only discuss but take action in the service of change.

Currently, Hsia has a solo exhibition, Wear Enough, on Governors Island, presented in partnership with the Taiwanese American Arts Council. She also presented a solo show at Queens College in 2024.
In addition to her work, Hsia is actively engaged with the artistic community, having served as a panelist for Queens Arts Fund in 2025 and on the Associate Board of the Grace Exhibition Space from 2023 to 2024. Internationally, she was an artist in residence in 2023 at both Casa Lethbridge in Canada and at the SÍM Residency in Iceland.

“ ‘Relationship’ is the keyword of my practice,” Hsia writes. “I talk about solidarity and simultaneously conflicts between individuals, cultures, generations, humans and environments. I create installations and present performances to address social topics from psychological perspectives, exploring the applications of psychological theories in performative art. Humanitarian crises, environmental degradation and mental health are what I investigate the most. The combination of the performance and the installation interprets my ideas comprehensively and provides immersive experiences to the audience.

The installation serves as the stage of the performance in the space, visualizing the scene, while the participatory performance brings out the narrative vividly, conducting audience engagement through body movements.”
