By now, you’ve probably heard about the devastating apartment fire in the Fordham section of the Bronx. On Sunday morning, the Twin Parks North West apartment complex was engulfed in a five-alarm-fire — the city’s deadliest in decades.
Yu and Me Books
New York City’s first Asian-American, female-run bookstore recently opened on Mulberry Street in Chinatown. Yu and Me Books, the brainchild of 27-year-old chemical engineer Lucy Yu, is already well on its way to becoming a neighborhood institution (and a wonderful alternative to ordering from Amazon!).
How to help your neighbors in 2022
Are you looking for items to add to your New Year’s resolution list? Or do you simply want to become more active within your community and feel connected again? We are starting our first newsletter of 2022 with our Give & Get help section. Epicenter-NYC reporter Andrea Pineda-Salgado curated a list of (mostly) in-person volunteer opportunities to help you get started.
Fresh faces and voices among the women on the city council
This year, New York City council representatives look like the constituents they represent, and for the first time ever there will be a women majority—31 out of 51 council members. There are also numerous firsts that are worth noting. Many members will be the first of their gender, race and/or ethnicity to represent their district. This new class of city council members will be the role models for the future diverse leaders that are yet to come.
The inside scoop: Parent, teachers and students react to returning to school amid Omicron chaos
As the first day of school of the new year neared last week, the Department of Education and new Mayor Eric Adams made it clear that schools would not be closing despite the spike in cases of students and teachers who tested positive for Covid-19 thanks to the super contagious Omicron variant.
The Bruce Museum
Winter is a great time to visit museums and here’s one that sits by the sea. The Bruce Museum (no, it’s not about Springsteen) has been holding exhibitions in Connecticut since 1912. Its permanent collection includes works of the leading American Impressionists who once gathered in the nearby Cos Cob Art Colony, as well as objects and artifacts from the natural world.

Final letter from a publisher: The story of a purple bag
This is our last communication with you in 2021. What. A. Year.
We were going to take this week off, but then Covid-19 positivity rates started to rise, our email inboxes filled up and our phone lines were flooded. So here we’ve been.
So many of you reached out to Epicenter-NYC in 2021 to navigate the abundance of questions you had surrounding vaccines. It was our honor to be there to help more than 10,000 neighbors secure shots. Over the last week, we’ve heard from so many of you again; confirms volunteer Diana Chiavetta: “I’ve reconnected with Epicenter clients that we had previously booked first-dose vaccine appointments for in the thick of February and March 2021, DESPERATELY looking for boosters. The Omicron surge of Christmas 2021 is here, but so is our resilience. I’m constantly in awe of the people of this city.”
11 urgent New Year’s resolutions for New York City
Epicenter-NYC spent the entirety of 2021 connecting neighbors to news, information and to each other — and their Covid-19 vaccines. By now, we feel well-equipped to spell out what New York City needs to urgently solve for if we are ever to get to the other side of the pandemic.
Epicenter’s 2021 GOATED list
It’s common to look back on the past 12 months and celebrate the man of the year (sometimes, rarely, a woman) or the most powerful, beautiful and mighty. This is not that list.
These are 11 must-know Covid-19 heroes from our view in the Epicenter, aka the Goated List. Many of these individuals are folks and institutions we worked with over the last year on vaccine outreach — and we’d be honored to continue to do so. None asked to be on this list and didn’t know of their inclusion until we published. It’s hardly exhaustive; tell us who we missed at hello@epicenter-nyc.com.
