May 6 through 10 is Teacher Appreciation Week. Started over 70 years ago by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, it’s a national holiday that reminds us to stop and show gratitude for the hard work and dedication of our children’s educators. From receiving words of acknowledgement to getting discounts from businesses, here are some ways teachers are being celebrated this week.
Give a shout out
Families can use the DOE All-Stars tool to thank a teacher, shout out a colleague, or submit a Big Apple Awards nomination. You can also share your gratitude on social media using the hashtag #ThankATeacherNYC.
Teacher perks
Some restaurants and retailers have also joined in on the celebration.
- Ending Sunday, May 12, teachers who present a valid ID get 20% off their orders for dine-in, call-in, and walk-in orders at Buffalo Wild Wings
- The Golden Corral is giving 20% off a buffet purchase with valid ID until May 10
- Staples is giving teachers a supply kit at Staples that include markers, pens, pencils, and glue. (20 kits per store while supplies last; limit one per teacher with teacher ID.) Teachers also get 20% off in-store purchases.

Gift ideas
If you’re trying to figure out a last-minute gift idea for your children’s teachers, just remember that it is the thought that counts. A gift card to a coffee shop near the school, flowers, or a handwritten card or note is always appreciated. Just keep in mind that most teachers could do without another mug!
