Last Friday, Mayor Eric Adams spent the morning at Bronx Delta School alongside NYC schools Chancellor David Banks to announce that the city would once again run the Summer Rising program. Despite issues with staffing and transportation last summer, they also shared that they will be increasing the program’s hours, site locations, and number of seats for younger students.
The free program will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and serve 110,000 students in K-9 and include academics in the morning and activities hosted by community-based nonprofits in the afternoon. Officials also announced there would be academic offerings for high school students for those who need additional help, with details to come later.
The premise of Summer Rising was to help students with learning lost due to remote and hybrid school schedules. The program will be concentrated in neighborhoods that have been identified to have the highest needs. Enrollment details have not yet been announced, but will be on a first-come, first-served basis, and students who are identified to have a need for additional support will be given priority.
