It’s been a hot summer, but relief is set to come this Sunday weather wise, which makes it the perfect opportunity to check out Mohonk Preserve, just 90 miles north of New York City (not to be confused with the neighboring Mohonk Mountain House — stunning but $$$$). Made up of more than 8,000 acres of mountain ridges, forests, fields, streams and ponds, the preserve offers ample opportunities for hiking, running, mountain biking, horseback riding, and cross-country skiing. Mohonk Preserve is also the home to the Shawangunk Mountains, also known as the “Gunks,” a premier climbing and bouldering destination. The preserve offers a variety of classes and activities such as yoga, forest bathing and edible plant walks. Check out the calendar here. There is a $15 entrance fee for hikers and a $20 fee for bikers, climbers and horseback riders. Learn more.

As far as food goes, we recommend packing a picnic for lunch and treating yourself to dinner at nearby Garvan’s Gastropub post-hike/bike/climb.
